The MacDev GTX marker was announced around the NXL World Cup 2024 event of this year. So, we are here to discuss what we have seen with the new GTX to see if it's worthy of a high-end paintball gun.
The MacDev GTX paintball gun offers a few great features that we really like. First off, the packaging of the GTX brings a new look and the case has some improvements over the Prime/Prime XTS/GT2. The MacDev power bank that comes with the marker allows for charging of many different things. It has multiple different cords to allow for charging of your GTX, iPhone, and other cell phones. The power bank also has a nice light for when it's dark outside to see inside your gearbag. This is a nice addition for a paintball marker that does not have disposable batteries that gives it an advantage over other chargeable paintball guns like the Dye M3+ or the Luxe Idol. Otherwise, the case offers great protection with a metal zipper, 3 compartments for the Shift 3 barrel system (2 inserts are included with the GTX), a nice parts kit, allen keys, quick start guide, and lube. Overall, we feel the case is up there with the other cases of the Dye MXR, DLX Luxe Idol, Planet Eclipse CS3, Geo R5, and LV2.
Now actually talking about the gun, the GTX offers some new features including a Shift 3 barrel, GTX bolt system, new ergonomics, OLED color display board and a unique lensed eye system coupled with magnetic eye covers.
These features bring to light many of the features of the high end competitors in this market from Planet Eclipse, Dye, and DLX. The tool-less magnetic eye covers sit extremely flush to the sleek body design of the marker and offer one of the easiest eye cover removals of any paintball gun. The lensed eye system also gives the eyes an extra level of protection for cleaning and allows for easy cleaning to keep the marker working properly.
So the eye system is pretty sweet, but we also love the GTX bolt system. In our testing, we were able to shoot EXTREMELY brittle Valken Tournament paintballs in 30 degree F weather with no hiccups. We shot an entire bag (500 paintballs) of this paint without any issues. It's unlikely that any marker would come across this level of brittle paint when using for a tournament and the GTX handled it LIKE A CHAMP!
In our efficiency test, the MacDev GTX with the new GTX bolt system did not impress. We got right around 1200 shots with 4100 PSI from a 77 CI Ninja tank. We do plan on retesting the GTX when the weather gets better to see if we are able to improve this number with tighter bore sizing of the paint, a full 4500 PSI fill, and warmer testing temperatures. Although we expect this number to improve some, we don't expect it to increase significantly. So, the GTX is definitely under the normal when considering efficiency compared the the CS3, LV2, Geo R5, DLX Luxe Idol, or Dye MXR. Is it enough to disqualify us from shooting it? No. This will still allow us to shoot 8-10 pods which is enough for almost any player including a trigger-happy back player.

On a positive note, during all of our testing for the efficiency and brittle paint tests of the GTX we had zero issues in our testing. Our testing occurred during cold weather and it cycled with no issues, did not chop ANY paintballs, and did not leak even when it was partially frozen! We were definitely impressed with the testing even with the mediocre efficiency numbers.
Ergonomically, the MacDev GTX is an interesting character. The marker is definitely one of the longest feeling markers out there. The new foregrip does not contain any function (does not retain the HPR or the batteries) and is simply there to hold on to.
The foregrip is definitely comfortable BUT is definitely a reach even compared to some of the longer feeling markers like the Planet Eclipse Geo R5. So, the GTX might not be the best ergonomic pick for the smaller player or the snake player. With that said, the GTX still feels good and will most likely be great to snap shoot with.
The GTX grips are definitely a more robust and harder rubber compared to the Dye MXR or any of the Planet Eclipse markers. In some ways, we like this texture but we also see the potential of this rubber being difficult to grip when playing in situations with paint, mud, and wet.
So overall, we think that the MacDev GTX offers all the high-end features as seen with Planet Eclipse, Dye, and DLX markers. We really tend to like the shot quality of the GTX but can understand there are 2 serious issues at hand here...
First, the efficiency test was a flop. The GTX efficiency is not at the same threshold as its competitors. This may be a reason for certain players to reconsider this marker (scenario players carrying a bunch of paint, back players in speedball). However, the gun performs flawlessly in our testing and seems to be reliable and can shoot brittle paint very well!
Our second and most profound issue is the potential for poor customer service. With that said, we have had multiple discussions with MacDev leadership who have assured us that this has changed. For that reason, we are supporting their products again and agreed to stock the GTX.
With all things considered, we are VERY happy to see another marker brand trying to re-emerge when the market is saturated by Planet Eclipse. Don't get us wrong, we love Planet Eclipse and think they are a GREAT paintball gun manufacturer, but competition is good to continue to innovate great future paintball markers. We also think the GTX can compete with other high-end electronic markers and are optimistic on the customer service/parts support.
